Chase Sapphire PreferredSummary List PlacementReview: Is the Chase Sapphire Preferred the right card for you?

With so many great rewards credit cards out there, picking the right one can be tough. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a longtime favorite of travelers looking to earn rewards points redeemable for plane tickets, hotel nights, cruises, trains, and other travel adventures.

The Sapphire Preferred is one of the best travel cards with an annual fee under $100, and its sign-up bonus is currently 80,000 points (after you spend $4,000 in the first three months of account opening). Even while travel is on hold due to the coronavirus, it’s a valuable option for earning bonus rewards on dining and groceries, and you can use your points for groceries, home improvement purchases, and more.

Beyond its rewards, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card comes with some of the best travel coverage available, including trip cancellation and interruption insurance and primary car rental insurance.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is the less-premium sibling of the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, which has a $550 annual fee compared to a $95 annual fee on the Sapphire Preferred. The Sapphire Reserve earns more points on travel and dining purchases and comes with up to a $300 annual travel credit, so it’s best suited to those who frequently travel.

If you’re interested in both Sapphire cards but you’re on the fence about paying a high annual fee, it could make sense to apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred. If you find you’re using all its benefits and more, you could request an upgrade to the Chase Sapphire Reserve down the line.

Bottom line: If you’re new to points and miles or just don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars in annual fees, this could be a great card for you. It earns bonus rewards on a wide array of travel and dining purchases, comes with a great sign-up bonus, and offers strong coverage including primary rental car insurance.
