Five new free agents who fill a need on the Giants’ 2020 roster

The Giants’ decision to non-tender center fielder Kevin Pillar on Monday was the clearest indication yet of what type of offseason fans should expect.

President of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi insisted the move to part ways with Pillar was not financially-motivated and instead indicated it was driven by a desire to give playing time to inexperienced options who could be a part of the team’s next core.

If the Giants are focused more on the long-term health of their organization and less on the results their 2020 club posts, it’s unlikely they’ll stumble upon building blocks among the pool of players who, like Pillar, were non-tendered on Monday.

What they can find, however, are players who are looking to re-establish their value that can become mid-summer trade chips or cheap talents willing to play part-time roles.

Of the 40 players who were non-tendered by MLB clubs, many will end up signing minor league contracts. Others, including some of the players listed below, will garner more serious interest from teams looking for productive major league assets.

Here’s a look at five players non-tendered on Monday who fill a need on the Giants’ 2020 roster.

Blake Treinen

The former Oakland A’s closer wouldn’t even have to move residences if he signs with a Giants team that’s in the market for a veteran right-handed reliever this winter. Treinen was one of baseball’s best relievers in 2018 when he finished with a 0.78 ERA and landed in sixth-place on the AL Cy Young ballot, but he was below league average in 2019 as he battled control issues.

Treinen would benefit from pitching in high-leverage situations in a pitcher’s paradise such as Oracle Park. If he enjoys a bounce back first half, the Giants could trade him at the 2020 deadline.
