Jeff Sessions Announces Bid For Former Senate Seat

On Thursday, former Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced he will run for his old U.S. Senate seat, just one day before Alabama’s filing deadline.

Sessions represented Alabama in the Senate for 20 years before he stepped down in 2017 to serve in the Trump administration.

But Sessions’ relationship with the president soured after he decided to recuse himself from the Russia investigation. President Donald Trump asked Sessions to resign in Nov. 2018.

Democratic Sen. Doug Jones currently holds Sessions’ former seat in the Senate. Sessions is joining a primary field already filled with multiple Republican candidates, including U.S. Rep. Bradley Byrne, Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill and former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville.

The GOP’s Alabama primary is scheduled for March 3.
