Lamb Jam: Bay Area restaurants compete in July 21 taste-off

Lamb pastrami was the big winner in 2017. Last year, it was lamb adobo empanadas.

What will 2019’s crop of chefs come up with?

Bay Area foodies can feast on creative lamb dishes — including Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Asian and Latin recipes — and vote for their favorite when the annual Lamb Jam returns to San Francisco’s Presidio on Sunday, July 21.

Defending his title will be chef Francis Ang and his Pinoy Heritage cooking team, who won in 2018 with their Filipino fusion recipe, lamb adobo empanadas.

Competing will be 13 other restaurants and their chefs: Zino of Berkeley, in the Hotel Shattuck Plaza (Brandon Hicks); Alaro Craft Brewery of Sacramento (Jason Azevedo); Sante Restaurant at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn (Marcellus Coleman); the Slanted Door of San Francisco and San Ramon (Terry Don); and nine San Francisco restaurants, Epic Steak (Dirk Tolsma); Dumpling Time (Edgar Agbayani); Salt House (Evan Gotanda); Trace at the W Hotel (Frederic Hoffman); The Bear and Monarch (Howard Ko); Lolinda (Juan Torres); Son’s Addition (Nick Cobarrauvias); CatHead’s BBQ (Pamela Schafer); and ThirstyBear Brewing Company (Robert McCarthy).

The winner of the judging panel’s decision will go on to cook at the national Lamb Jam competition. It’s been San Francisco’s title for two years now. Pinoy Heritage captured the national crown in 2018 and the year before, chef Mark Stark and the Bird and the Bottle (Santa Rosa) won with their lamb pastrami.

Besides tastings, the July 21 event includes wine- and cocktail-pairings and grilling and butchering demonstrations.

The annual event, sponsored by the American Lamb Board, highlights the 80,000 family-operated farms and ranches raising sheep in the United States.
