Thousand Oaks shooting: 15th deadliest US shooting reportedly only used a single handgun
13 people, including the gunman, were killed at a shooting at a bar in Los Angeles’ Thousand Oaks neighborhood on Thursday.
The shooting was the 15th-most-deadly in US history, and police could find just a single handgun, according to Sherriff Geoff Dean.
“Assault rifles get all the attention but certainly a handgun in the hand of the right person can certainly wreak a lot of damage, especially at close range,” he said.
A mass shooting in Thousand Oaks, California that has left at least 13 people dead is the 15th-deadliest shooting in US history, and the gunman only used a single handgun.
The shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill, in the Thousand Oaks suburb about 45 miles northwest of Los Angeles, has left 12 victims including a sergeant, and the suspect dead.
Police at the scene were only able to find a single handgun, Sheriff Geoff Dean, who responded to the incident, told the “Today” show.

When asked on the show if he thought it was unusual “that a handgun could cause that much damage that quickly,” Dean said he wasn’t surprised.
“Assault rifles get all the attention but certainly a handgun in the hand of the right person can certainly wreak a lot of damage, especially at close range.”
The LA Times reported that the gunman used a .45 handgun and a smoke device.
Handguns are the most popular type of firearm in the US, and they were the most commonly used weapon across 157 mass shootings up to October 2018, according to an analysis by The Washington Post.
The gunman in the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in October used an AR-15 was armed with an AR-15 and handguns. …read more
