Letter: Government designed to operate on compromise

Government designed to
operate on compromise

Our federal government was consciously, explicitly designed to operate on compromise. So strategies such as “resist everything the other guy proposes,” “pledge to never X” regardless of what X is, always employing “they” and never “we” perspectives — employed more and more by both parties — fly in the face of the Constitution’s intent.

As much as a president’s behaviors may be problematic, Congress is the larger problem. Politicians no longer even try to disguise that their vote is based on how it will likely affect their next primary. Yet We the People keep sending these same politicians back to Washington, D.C., term after term after term.

The bad news is We the People, through apathy and cynicism, have allowed this to happen. The good news, however, is We the People have the power to gradually change the paradigm: vote to remove, regardless of affiliation, those who persistently disrespect the spirit of our Constitution. Corollary: Donate only to campaigns of individuals you believe will respect and adhere to constitutional principles, never to party committees, PAC’s, etc.
