Idris Elba has shrugged off James Bond prospects: ‘It could be a woman’
Reports once again are popping up that Idris Elba is in the running to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond, if and when Craig eventually retires the part.

According to the U.K. publication The Daily Star, Bond series producer Barbara Broccoli thinks “it is time” for a black actor to star in the franchise. That comment is credited to director Antoine Fuqua, and it has once again revived talk that Elba, the 45-year-old star of “The Wire,” “Luther” and “Molly’s Game,” would be the perfect choice to step in.
“Idris could do it if he was in shape,” said Fuqua, speaking at the launch of his new app that lets moviegoers listen to films in 3-D quality sound. “You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that.”
Talk about the British actor as the British super spy has been circulating since at least 2014. The rumors circulated again last summer after Craig, another Brit, initially expressed reluctance to return for his fifth outing as 007. He famously joked that he’d “rather break this glass and slash my wrists” than play Bond again.
“It’s no secret that MGM has been toying with the notion of getting Idris in,” sources told the Daily News at the time.
But Craig returned to shoot the next Bond film, which is due in theaters in the fall of 2019. Meanwhile, Elba had to bow out due to scheduling conflicts with filming the TV series “Luther.”
While neither Elba nor Broccoli have officially commented on the latest report, courtesy of Fuqua, Twitter lit up with many people expressing excitement about the idea of Elba taking over the role.
