World Cup superstition: They’ll never beat the octopus

A deaf white cat from Russia’s Hermitage Museum has been selected the official animal oracle of the 2018 World Cup.

Achille will attempt to duplicate the success of the wondrous octopus Paul, animal oracle of the 2010 World Cup.

Achille’s résumé includes a 3-of-4 record in Confederation Cup picks. He is one of dozens of cats, ostensibly kept as mouse hunters, at the famous St. Petersburg museum.

For his first selection, he went with Russia over Saudi Arabia in Thursday’s game, choosing the bowl of cat food that bore his native land’s flag.

Paul the octopus, who lived at a German aquarium, correctly picked 12 of 14 matches, including Spain’s championship win over the Netherlands. Then, perhaps exhausted by the effort, he unexpectedly expired three months later.

A guinea pig and a piranha were put forward as potential oracles in 2014, but neither showed Paul’s aptitude.
