Capitals’ Nicklas Backstrom reveals he played with 2 fractures in finger


In what wasn’t a terrifically guarded secret, Washington Capitals centre Nicklas Backstrom told reporters on Wednesday that he suffered multiple fractures in his finger.

Backstrom missed Game 6 in Round 2 and Games 1 through 3 of Round 3 during Washington’s Stanley Cup run with a hand injury.

He came back four Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final and never missed another game, contributing five goals and 23 points in 20 playoff games.

The 30-year-old could be seen getting help from teammate Alex Ovechkin when the time came to lift the Stanley Cup.

The Swedish pivot will not require surgery.
