Sigfox’s is accelerating its diversification into the IoT

French low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) operator Sigfox revealed a new service designed to allow companies to experiment with IoT devices, dubbed Sens’It Discovery, according to VentureBeat. The service is based off the Sens’It 3 embedded sensor that connects directly to Sigfox’s low-power network and can be used to experiment with various IoT applications.

The small device can detect temperature, light, motion, humidity, and vibration. The new service is designed to help current non-IoT adopters test out the IoT without dropping thousands of dollars. The French network operator plans to make Sens’It Discovery available to customers in the 45 countries where Sigfox currently operates sometime later this year, but it hasn’t yet revealed a final price for the service.

The move comes only a few months after Sigfox announced a new chipset it developed in partnership with several telco hardware providers. Interestingly, the chipset can help connect IoT devices to Sigfox’s own proprietary network and to Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) and LTE Cat-M1 networks, two popular, rival LPWAN standards.

In addition, the chipset can help IoT devices quickly switch between different networks to transmit data depending on the bandwidth they need. This chipset and Sens’It Discovery together show the company is aggressively expanding its footprint in the IoT space beyond its proprietary network.

Diversifying beyond its core low-power network business segment is a smart move for Sigfox, especially as it steers toward an initial public offering sometime in the not-too-distant future. Sigfox CEO Ludovic Le Moan told the Financial Times in early 2017 that the company is considering going public in 2018 or 2019, even though it recently completed a massive $160 million Series E funding round.
