Prep basketball: Newark Memorial, Moreau stay perfect in MVAL

UNION CITY — Newark Memorial staged a second-half comeback on the road Thursday night to defeat reigning Northern California Division I champion James Logan 58-53.

The victory kept the Cougars undefeated in the Mission Valley Athletic League and tied with Moreau Catholic for first place.

Moreau, which shared the league crown with Logan last season on its way to winning the NorCal Division II title, throttled Kennedy-Fremont 92-27 on Thursday.

Newark Memorial had an early lead against Logan but trailed at halftime after watching the Colts go on a 14-0 run to turn an 18-11 deficit into a 25-18 advantage. Logan led 25-19 at the break.

The Colts were unable to sustain the momentum in the second half as they fell to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the MVAL.

Endigo Coleman had 14 points — 11 in the second half — and Jamal Frenchwood had 13 points to lead Newark Memorial. The Cougars also got nine points and tenacious defense from Japjit Gil as they ran their record to 7-9, 3-0.

Gabriel Hawkins scored 14 points and Brah’Jon Thompson and Malcolm Steadmen each had 11 points for Logan, which had won nine of its previous 10 games after an 0-3 start, including the championship at the De La Salle tournament.

Moreau 92, Kennedy-Fremont 27

Moreau lost its top two players from last season’s team, Damari Milstead and Kyree Walker, but is still very good and getting better as each game unfolds.

It was no contest Thursday as Moreau built a 30-2 lead after the first quarter and 55-5 cushion at halftime against an opponent that has not won a game all season.

Dallas Rider (16 points), LJ Anderson (15), David Hector (14) and Amil Fields (13) scored in double figures for Moreau, which improved to 9-4 overall and 3-0 in the MVAL.
