Vice President Pence to visit Sacramento


Vice President Mike Pence will arrive in Sacramento on Monday, a day after sparking major controversy over his decision to leave an NFL game in Indianapolis early after players knelt during the national anthem.

Pence and his wife, Karen, will touch down from Air Force Two at the Mather Air Force Base on Monday afternoon. He will meet with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, business and community leaders to discuss tax reform.

Pence drew national attention after he prematurely departed a Sunday afternoon game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts. Several 49ers players knelt during the national anthem.

“I left today’s Colts game because @POTUS and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem,” tweeted Pence after leaving the game.

Democratic politicians and NFL players criticized Pence’s move as a “PR stunt.”

“For me, that’s case in point for systematic oppression,” said 49ers cornerback Eric Reid after the game. “He’s a powerful man — has a huge following, has a huge platform, and this is what he chooses to do: Fly in on taxpayer money to confuse the message that we’ve been working so hard to control the narrative on?”
